Slap Happy Saturday!

I saw a lot of grinning pilots after we landed at the beach today……..

We took a full Eagle van plus a truck up to EJ Bowl.  There were a lot of familiar faces, Ron, Bob, OJ, Cracka, Lee, Cort, Jackson, Neil, Chris, Peaches, Marge, Bart, another Neil, and a visiting pilot Greg.  Cycles were coming in from the South East 5-10 at launch.  It was on when we got there and most everybody got there gear going and into the air pretty quickly.  Some pilots went west toward Alternator others opted to beat it into the wind going East to R&R.   After boating around for a bit above launch I opted to head to R&R.   Several pilots were already established and climbing quickly there.  There was abundant lift with some spicy edges.  As Cracka would say “It’s on like donkey kong!”.   Managed about 4600ft at R&R and headed over to thermal factory.  Smooth glide over and then seemed to be some mixing winds over thermal factory.   Some strong climbs.  It was fun to gaggle up with friends and climb out.  Tried pushing East a few times but never committed to it.  Bounced around out front and kept fading back to the thermal factory and the back ridge (thermal drift was fast).  Several people made it West to Alternator and then went East down range.  A few made it back and landed at the beach.   I maxed out my altitude and decided to head for the beach.  I knew the AVP was in town at West Beach so headed toward the wharf.  A little too spicy for pic’s in the mountains so here are a few from the smooth buoyant glide out looking at the volleyball tournament and the cruise ship.

SBSA semi-annual Big Sur Fall camping and flying trip

Hello Pilots,

The Semi-annual SBSA Big Sur Fall Flying trip is coming up soon (Oct. 18th -20th) so dust off that camping gear and get ready to fly the scenic Big Sur coastline. We’ve planned it on a full moon weekend which always brings out the wild side around the campsite!  Don’t miss out!!
We will be doing a potluck on Saturday night so plan to prepare a little extra if you wish to participate.
We have two group campsites at the Plaskett Creek campgrounds.  More details here.
While there is plenty of room for camping and socializing….the parking is limited so please start working with friends or contact other pilots and carpool.  There’s an added cost incentive for this as well. It will be the same as last year, $25 per car for 2 nights or $15 per car for one night.  Cheaper by the carload.
If you play an instrument, bring it for the nightly jam session.
Cheers,
-Jon Blake

Spot landing contest Thursday at Elings

Got skills? Let’s see ’em!

We will be having a spot landing contest at Eling’s flight park (training hill) starting at 4:30pm on this Thursday, Sept. 12th.

Everyone is welcome to come out and enjoy so bring your family and friends. Plan is to have a little happy hour sunset watching following the contest.  Come on out and try your spot landing skills.  We will have some prizes to give away for those that come the closet to the cone.  Markers will be provided.

Some simple rules:
It’s where your feet touch the ground that marks your landing
You must land on your feet
No drinking and flying

We will start at 4:30pm and end around 6pm (if students are still flying, please give them priority and stay out of their way)

Hope to see you out there this Thursday!

Cheers,
-Jon

I sent a Text to Chris G to see if landing at NHS was an option…Yep! was his reply then he got on the radio and gave me wind info which was very helpful!  Looking at my watch I realized I was going to land right at his meet time for going up for a glass off flight from pine.  That would have been too cool hitching a ride back to my car on top.  Fortunately, Ron, Bob and Tom were already on their way back with my rig and the others too. Thanks so much guys.

The things we do to pack on grass...

The things we do to pack on grass…

I have always wanted to try this flight, and it just unfolded in front of me today.  Super sweet!

I understand today (Sunday) was similar or even better, and I can’t wait to hear what the hang pilots have to say when they tell their stories of flying back to SB from Pine…Niiiiiice!

Big props to Aaron and the SoCal league for taking the plunge and trying out Pine.  Thanks also to the launch crew on take off for helping lay out, and for Fast Eddie, (who wasn’t our driver this time) for keeping an eye on us every step of the way. It gives me great confidence knowing folks are keeping an eye out and a radio on. Thanks so much!

Great job to Dave Teal on his big flight, as well as Alex almost making the beach on the glass off. I understand Stephan made goal on the league task and wisely flew past the 50/50 to the sod fields for some well earned grassy packing.
