Mount Abel

I decided to take a little drive up to Abel over the weekend to see if it was still launchable — it is. There are some low trees below launch that could probably use some pruning — two to three people could get it done in about 20 minutes. Right now you would be fine with a 2 to 3 stepper. The top of the trees are about 15ft or so out in front of and 20 ft or so below launch. PG pilots will have to lay out across the road.

For those who don’t know about Abel, launch faces basically due west. There is a huge LZ below launch, however, there is no access to it; if you don’t get up and out you’re looking at about 1 1/2 mile hike. You’ll come out at the east end of Apache Canyon road off of the 33. Having said that, a modern topless glider just might make the glide out to Apache Canyon from launch altitude.

The fastest way to Abel is I 5 to Frazier Park. It’s about 1 1/2 hour drive from Magic Mountain. The road up to launch is about a mile past the golf course at the Pine Mountain Club. It’s just over 4.3 miles to launch from the main road. I piled up some rocks right at launch.
